Synology offers a RAID alternative, SHR, which operates slightly different than a standard RAID. It allows for you to grow an array overtime with disks of different sizes while still getting an increased storage capacity. SHR is simple, there are two types SHR1 and SHR2. SHR1 gives you one disk fault tolerance, SHR2 gives you two disks of fault tolerance. No need to research which RAID level is best, SHR takes care of all of it for you. SHR works by creating virtual groups of RAIDs on the disks in order to get the maximum amount of storage out of your disks. In this video we go over how SHR works when compared to RAID and some of the advantages / disadvantages of choosing it. What is RAID and why do I need it on my NAS Drive? 🤍 Large RAID storage for archive data storage solutions RAID is not a new thing. Originally created as means of combining multiple smaller hard drives and combining them into 1 large storage volume (so your PC would only see one hard drive like your C:/ drive, instead of several smaller hard drives connected). RAID stands for either Redundant Array of Inexpensive Disks, or Redundant Array of Independent Disks. Now the reason for the two different versions of the letters in RAID is largely due to how storage has changed. As Hard drives have grown progressively larger in capacity, the need for creating massive volumes has been outweighed by the more current trend of data storage arrays needing Redundancy. Storage is important for creative professionals, whether you are a single user or a team where pooling data in important a Network Attached Storage, aka NAS might be the device that you want to consider. Synology is a system that I have been using for close to a decade now and it one that I recommend to all of my friends and my clients that I consult with. You can have a large storage pool with redundancy build in, so that if something should happen you data are safe (even with this redundancy you still need to back up your data). Synology has an easy to use but powerful user web interface that I prefer and it tells you in realtime what is happening to your storage pool. The later models also have a PCI-E slot so that a 10 gigabit (Gbe) card can be installed so that you can get speeds in the range of 500 MB/s and up Writes and close to 1000 MB/s Read depending on the setup, number of drives and RAID Type. Any Synology SHR is a RAID system that offer the most flexibility of any RAID systems out there to date. In this video, because I am upgrading my array, drives are empty and they are ready for a crash test. So this video will include me crashing both SHR 1 & 2 in different scenario. I am crashing this, so you don't have to. And when you run into this situation you'll know how to remedy it. Please give this video a like and subscribe if you are new! Synology DS1621xs+ NAS Drive Review 🤍 To say that I have looked at a lot of different devices over the years would be a fantastic understatement. Nevertheless, when I finally got my hands on the new Synology DS1621xs+ NAS drive, I have to admit I was excited. For those of you that have followed the Synology NAS brand over the years, along with numerous positive aspects of both their hardware and software series, there has always been one subject of which they have been fantastically abstinent in pursuing at the desktop level - 10Gbe. The subject of desktop profile solutions that are equipped with 10Gbe is something that Synology has resisted for an incredibly long time. That isn't to say that they hey have never pursued 10 gigabit at all, from a series of well equipped upgrade PCIe cards that enable the 10 x Nick connection, to numerous rackmount solutions that arrived with the sport, they do understand it's value. However the Synology DS1621xs+ is the first Intel powered desktop solution with 10Gbe they have ever released, as well as bringing numerous other Synology brand hardware options to the mix. With it slightly intimidating price tag, it is quite the investment on day one. so today, let's take a good look at the Synology DS1621xs+ 10g Nas and decide if it's deserves your data. What is the difference between SHR and RAID? 🤍 Synology Hybrid RAID or SHR, has been around for quite a while now, and though it has not made the big impact that Synology NAS’ Btrfs file system has, it is still an increasingly popular choice for many when it comes to protecting their hardware and their data in a Hard Drive Enclosure. Both NAS and DAS utilise RAID as a form of protection from an HDD or SSD failing and the consequences of data loss that can follow. It should always be highlighted that both traditional RAID and SHR are NOT forms of Backing up and you should ALWAYS have an offsite or at the very least off-system backup in place creating real-time images and copies of your mission-critical data. However coming back to the subject at hand, which method of redundancy should you be considering for your storage array – RAID or SHR? Order your NAS from the NAS Experts, - 🤍 What is RAID?  RAID, or Redundant Array of Independent Disks, was originally many years ago as a way of combining lots of smaller disks together to create a much larger storage volume, with redundancy as a secondary priority. However with the large scale growth of Hard Drives these last 5 years and more, with Terabytes of data becoming available on single disks, the primary function of RAID has shifted towards data protection. That isn't to say that pooling smaller drives does not still happen, but with drives currently available to buy in 14TB such at the Seagate Ironwolf NAS Drive, you can see why the purpose of RAID in an archive and cold storage is more about hardware protection. Available in numerous types, but the most popular of which is below: JBOD – Just a Bunch of Disks, not really a RAID in any shape or form. RAID 0 – A method of combining two hard drives or more into a single GIANT volume of data, however, if you lose one drive, you lose all your data! RAID 1 – Using pairs of drives, this will HALF your total capacity, but give you a complete and up to the second copy of all your data. Meaning if a drive fails, you have an EXACT copy ready to access. RAID 5 – One of the most popular RAID levels, It requires at least 3 drives or more, data is written across the drives in stripes (waves) and across each stripe of data one drive holds a tiny nugget of data called ‘parity’ with is basically a coded blueprint of the data on the other drives in that stripe, then each stripe has the parity deposited on a different disk each time. The result is that if a drive fails, the system can re-build the data using the parity (blueprints) on each stripe. This can take time though and it should also be noted that the read and write of data in a RAID 5 is a little slower than normal as the system has to work out background calculations whilst writing data. RAID 10 – Think of this as a combination of RAID 0 and RAID 1, or RAID 1+0. You require at least 4 drives and drives are paired up as 2x2. The result is that you have two hard drives whose capacity to added together, and another pair of drives creating real-time copies (again, up to the second) of all the data. Probably the most expensive of all the RAID types here in terms of cost per GB, but gives you much MUCH higher read and write speeds compared to other RAID levels. NAS Brands in 2021 – Which One Should You Choose? 🤍 Buying your first Network Attached Storage (NAS) device can be a remarkably daunting task! Even for the most technologically knowledgable, a NAS is a very different kind of device than most of the hardware in your environment. At its heart, it is just a computer (like most things are when you break them down to the basics) that is built for a specific task. However, there are numerous elements of a NAS (such as it always being ON, the constant remote accessibility and focus on storage primarily) that set it apart from most other devices, and this si where a lot of people get a bit intimidated by it. There is always the option of using cloud services, such as DropBox, Google Drive, OneDrive and more, but these are often paid monthly subscription services, involve your data being shared across other services and (most worrying of all) leaves your precious data in a position to be used for analytics without your knowledge OR open to hacking because of the sheer size of the target. Add to this the fact that in most cases, a severed connection to the internet means a severed connection to your data, and the appeal of moving away from 3rd party cloud and on to a NAS is pretty clear. The industry of NAS has been in constant growth for over 30 years, with big players like HP, Dell and IBM steadily losing the home and SMB market to the likes of Synology, QNAP and more. The brand diversity in the field of NAS servers has continued to grow right up until 2021, with the benefit that the way you can interact with your data, what NAS devices can do and the price point of this technology being exceedingly affordable (with fully featured solutions WITH storage media arriving as low as £200).

My Synology DS918+ only had one drive. As a result, there was no data protection. If the one drive failed, I could potentially lose a lot of data. As I'm now depending on this NAS, it was apparent that Data Protection was becoming a necessity. Therefore, a 2nd 12TB drive was added. This video will explain how to add a 2nd drive for Data Protection to your NAS. Keep in mind RAID is not a backup, it is for redundancy/data protection. There are other options for local/offsite backups which we may explore in future videos. Synology NAS Setup Guide 2021 featuring a Synology ds920+ using SHR with varying size disks and installing DSM 7 (Beta). if you are looking for a NAS, the DS920+ should definitely enter your list of options. please subscribe and click the bell icon. This Synology NAS Setup Guide on ds920+ will focus on two main goals: unboxing DS920+, setting it up with SHR with varying size disks and installing DSM 7 (beta) on it. One of Synology's most unique features, available in the Synology ds920+ NAS is the SHR and the ability to use different size disks in a specialized RAID array, without loosing capacity or redundancy. In this Synology NAS Setup Guide we will also see how easy it is in DSM 7 to create an SHR volume, how streamlined and convenient the wizards are and in general, how simplified the entire process is. Synology DiskStation DS920+ NAS is a 4-bay network attached storage device that delivers speedy performance and offers an great selection of optional server, backup, and productivity apps. its the ideal combination of an extremely feature rich NAS but in a small enough size to fit almost anywhere. The Synology DS920+ features an Intel Celeron J4125 processor running at 2.0GHz (2.7Ghz in burst mode), and comes with 4GB of DDR4 RAM installed. You can slot in an additional 4GB or 8GB into the memory slot that’s located inside next to the drives. unofficial sources indicate you can even add an additional 16GB but that will void your warranty. hopefully, this Synology ds920+ review and setup video will prove helpful in your NAS buying journey and we certainly recommend the DS920+ as objectively we possibly can. SPOILER: Switch from SHR to RAID... In this in performance review, I go through the process of switching my setup from SHR to RAID to let you know how much faster a vanilla RAID 6 setup is compared to the recommended system default of SHR. RESULTS For transferring 35GB of data. Synology NAS SHR2 Encrypted Volume: 25 minutes Synology NAS RAID6 Unencrypted Volume: 5 and half minutes. QNAP NAS RAID6 Encrypted Volume: 2 minutes and 11 seconds. Unfortunately I didn't get round to testing RAID6 Encrypted performance on a Synology, but just a word of warning, please make sure you choose wisely when setting up your NAS, as once you go with the system default of SHR, you're stuck with it. There's no way to migrate it over to RAID. SHR does give you extra flexibility when adding different sized drives, but in my experience it is very slow. By far the fastest way to upgrade your Synology NAS if using SHR, if you are doing all the drives at once, is to copy the data off and make a new array, then copy it back on. Individual drive upgrade times are measured in the DAYS. Going from five 4TB to five 10TB discs takes around 10 days to complete. Terramaster NAS Introduce a Flexible RAID System into TOS 5🤍 With several NAS brands in the market, it can often be the small features that one brand offers over another than can be the deciding factor for many in choosing the right solution for their needs. One feature that current NAS favourite Synology have offered on their solutions in the last few years was SHR (Synology Hybrid RAID) and this was a feature that many people desired enough to choose their premium platform over others. This is about to change however with the news that TOS 5 from Terramaster (the software that is included with their NAS systems) features a new fluid/flexible RAID system too, known as TRAID. This is a very appealing feature for many that are already looking at Terramaster NAS’ affordability. TOS has revealed several new features (isolation mode, Surveillance Camera software, AI Photo recognition and more) and the TRAID configuration to allow flexible and fluid RAID storage is going to be very popular indeed. So, today I want to talk about what NAS is, what a NAS can do, and which NAS Brand you should consider buying in 2021. This description contains links to and Amazon.
